Sunday Run

Between two ponds

Posted by Eoin Connaughton on Jan 28, 2018

We ran from Fairholmes this morning; visiting Howden pond and the pond in Hancock Wood.

The dam wall was fairly noisy...

Both ponds feature in a fell race next weekend, and one of them features in two fell races on consecutive days. On Saturday you leave Howden pond in a southerly direction up a steep grassy climb - passing Nether Hey. On Sunday you follow the path eastwards and head north to Upper Hey. If you are heading south as indeed we were this morning, you find yourself confronting the descent through Catholes Wood and the crossing of Abbey Brook. With wet feet we subsequently found the trod up Cogman Clough and arrived at the ruined cabin. (see banner image above)

A faint trod then takes you past Poynton Bog and you select from the main drag of paths to find the pond in Hancock Wood.

Hancock Pond - sounds easy enough, but there are some fell runners about who have never been.
